This September we went apple picking at Baugher’s Orchard in Westminster, Maryland. We went last year, too, so I guess it’s become a yearly tradition thing. It’s a perfect way to welcome in the fall.
Not far from us in Baltimore County, Baugher’s is a farm, orchard, market and restaurant in Carroll County, Maryland. They have different crops depending on the season. During apple picking season, there are different varieties of apples ready to pick at different times.
I don’t know a ton about all the different kinds of apples, but I’ve been learning (and tasting) more since moving up north. When you pick at Baugher’s they give you a little information about the varieties available and what they are best used for: eating or baking. Maybe next year I will attempt the baking ones!
Apple picking is of course a fantastic way to teach the kids about fruit-bearing trees. I also noticed they were more excited about eating apples after our trip. The day was breezy and gorgeous and the view of the rolling hills was straight out of a tourism brochure. It’s one of my favorite places to go in Maryland.
What about you? Do you like to go apple picking?
